Design process in the automotive industry 1/3

 Hello everyone,

I hope you all have a great spring, which has finally revealed itself here in Gothenburg!

I am located at Lynk & Co Design, where I will be working in a two-part setup for the internship. It might sound strange at first for me to do an internship in the automotive industry, the name of my program is called “Fashion Management and Marketing” after all. However, There are a lot of similarities between the two industries that I probably will delve deeper into in later entries. In this entry however, I will try to explain as much as I can (big corporations = even bigger DNA’s) of what my first days has been like.

As I’ve mentioned, the internship will be divided in two parts, the first five weeks will be located within the strategic branding department, and then I will be working with the CMF (color, material, and trims) design department.

The first two weeks has been intense, many new faces and names combined with new workplace lingo and trying to understand how the automotive industry operates are just some reasons why lately, my average bedtime has been around 8.30.

Right now, I’m responsible for a project trying to find tools to better thematically analyze the works and designs of different departments to use in branding purposes later on. The work gives me great insight in how the design process is carried out in the automotive industry. Already I have found much likeness to how many fashion brands work with the design process of collections.

One of the biggest challenges so far has been to understand the type of market, and moreover stakeholders, that this company targets. The company primary target is the Chinese market, which I’m not familiar with. Thus, there has been a challenge to quickly learn how the company’s primary markets differs from what I am accustomed to.

Despite this challenge, the work has been motivating, fun and interesting, and I’m looking forward to the remainder of my stay here.

Have a great day, I'm excited to read what you all are up to!
